WHY ROBINSON
So why choose Robinson? Picking a Cambridge college can feel like a mind boggling task, especially with every college trying to convince you that they are the best for you. Robinson College is the newest college in Cambridge, built entirely out of red bricks it certainly breaks the stereotype. For those of you looking for an alternative to the more traditional Cambridge colleges, then Robinson College could be the place for you.
FRIENDLY AND WELCOMING
Robinson strives on being a friendly college, we have a diverse range of students from all over the world and from many different backgrounds studying at Robinson. The college atmosphere is laid back and friendly. All first years live in the staircases of the main college building whilst second and third years also have the choice to live in the college owned houses on surrounding the college site. Unlike at lots of other colleges the fact that all undergraduates live on the same site allows for close networks of friends to form in and between different yeargroups.
THE GARDENS
The gardens are beautiful and tranquil, hidden behind the red brick castle and maze of the college houses, they're a perfect place to take a moment to have a walk and relax. Our gardens are open to all members of the college and strolling on the grass to enjoy them is completely allowed! In summer students often eat their lunches on the lawn outside, and after exams they can be found playing croquet and soaking up the sun. If you’re really lucky you might also spot the deer that’s also made this little oasis her home, otherwise it’s just the birds, cats (and students) that contribute to the local wildlife.
RED BRICK CAFÉ
The café is open during the day and transforms into a bar during the evening, The café has a good range of sandwiches, wraps and hot paninis. It serves an excellent selection of hot drinks, smoothies, milkshakes and diverse tea selection (everything from earl grey to green). They also stock a range of emergency supplies and staples – eggs, bread, pasta and milk. In the evening the bar often hosts entertainment for students in the form of quizzes, open-mic and stand-up nights.
THE GARDEN RESTAURANT
The canteen at Robinson is known as the Garden Restaurant. Looking out onto the gardens it opens for three meals a day during the week and brunch on the weekends. The Garden Restaurant has excellent vegan and vegetarian options too, and the staff are more than happy to help cater for special dietary requirements.
FORMALS
Despite Robinson being a modern college, we keep the traditions that suit us. Formal hall is held on Tuesdays and Fridays involving a three course set menu in gowns. Formals are in no way compulsory but are a very nice way to celebrate a special occasion.
LIBRARY AND STUDY RESOURCES
The Robinson library holds over 50,000 books and is an incredibly convient place to work. The library is also open 24/7 with the librarian being on hand from 9-5 during the week if you need help or assistance.
LOCATION
The college itself is located at the end of Burrel's Walk. This leafy avenue of trees leads students straight from college down towards the backs and into the centre of town. At Robinson you can avoid the hustle and bustle of the city, and tourists whilst still being close enough to walk there and back in 20 minutes. Robinson is located close to the Sidgewick Site (Arts), West Cambridge (Science), Centre for Mathematical Sciences and University Library. Meaning that for the majority of students everything they might need is within a few minutes walking distance.
SPORTS
We share our playing fields with Queens' College a short cycle away on Barton Road. The ground has two soccer pitches, two rugby pitches and two hockey pitches. Grass tennis courts are available in the summer, and three hard tennis courts and a netball court are available throughout the year.
The Robinson College Boat Club shares boatclub facilities with Lady Margaret Boat Club (St John's) which is the second college boathouse on the river Cam as you go out of town.
