College Politics

The more formal points of contact that the RCSA has with the College Officers is through the various Committees upon which we sit. Below is a list of the Committees that effectively run the College, and a little explanation of what they are responsible for and who from the RCSA sits on them.

I'm hoping that as people see what committees exist and what they do, you can tell us if you have issues that you would like us to raise in them. That is after all one of the primary reasons for the RCSA's existence.

So if there is anything you want us to make some noise about, get in touch!

College Committees

College Council

The governing body of college. Has overall ruling on all issues in college. The biggest issue of student interest that regularly goes to College council, is the annual rent & KFC increase proposals. These are submitted to council after several weeks of discussion between the RCSA, the MCR, and the Senior Bursar. The RCSA have two seats on council, and the MCR have one.

Finance Committee

The people who control the money. They approve/reject departmental budgets, and expenditure. The RCSA has no representation on the Finance committee, except for the annual meeting where our budget is approved, when the RCSA Treasurer is in attendance.

Joint Liaison Committee

Made up of an equal number of students and fellows (about 6 of each), the JLC is one of the best lines of communication that the students have to the 'highest powers' in college. This is where we can raise any big issues of concern to the students (and vice versa with the fellows).

Admissions Committee

A fairly self-explanatory committee, which looks at the issue of ensuring that Robinson is accessible to applicants from all backgrounds, and general recruitment. In conjunction with the RCSA Access Officer, runs Target School visits. It also oversees the CUSU Shadowing Scheme at Robinson College level, and prints the Students' Prospectus. The RCSA President, Ethnic Minorities Officer and Academic Affairs Officer sit on the Committee too.

Education Committee

This is Chaired by a Senior Fellow and students are represented by the RCSA Acadmic Affairs Officer.

Library Committee

The RCSA Academic Affairs Officer represents the student body on issues reagrding the usage and composition of the library.

IT Committee

The IT committee consists of the College Computer Officers, RCSA and MCR Computer officers, the Fellow Computer Officer, and the Domestic Bursar. As the name suggests, it's for discussing IT related issues. It meets once a term.

Safety Advisory Committee

This involves every service department of College, represented by the relevant HoD and the RCSA through the Vice President. It ensures we abide by Health and Safety standards and new initiatives in relation to the same. Issues involve lighting, fire safety and can encompass security.

Gardens Committee

Meets termly to discuss all issues related to the gardens in Robinson with the head gardener. The student body is represented on this committee by the RCSA Green Officer.

Catering Committee

The Catering and Amenities Officer and 3 other RCSA committee members meet with the head of catering, head chef, a representative from the bar staff and 4 members of the MC to discuss the issues arising from food and the environment associated with the Garden Restaurant, Red Brick Café and Bar.
